My name is Hawk Mikado and I spent two years building my first lead magnet. I was a newbie. I barely knew what I was doing when it came to creating funnels, or how to increase website traffic, and yeah, I only got one sale. I was super excited. I was to create a lead funnel for a membership site - which turned out to be my first problem. I needed to create a membership site as a lead magnet and run a free trial; sadly, it didn't work out. The person got their trial and stayed on for five months. But then, I had to refund their final month because they literally never logged in. They never consumed the content or did anything. I knew I needed to change something I was doing.
I'd learned about online marketing and this lead funnel thing on my own and was trying to figure it out myself. But, I knew something had to change if I was going to create the results that I wanted to create. "I've gotta do something different," I thought. I needed to get the name Hawk Mikado out there. To do this,I had to go to some networking events. In one of the local events I attended, they had these free networking communities, and one day they announced they were hosting an implementation workshop. At the time, I didn't have the money for it; I was broke. I was trying to do everything myself and was doing it wrong, but I thought, "you know what? I have to show up to this workshop." The topic? How we create and implement lead flow in our business. This was right up my alley.
I had nothing to lose, so I attended the workshop where we learned about SEO. The instructor was working on local businesses since most people there were local businesses. I was the only digital marketer there. But I was confident I could help coaches and speakers build their practice. As I was figuring this out, he explained how to do all these different things like how to drive traffic to your website and get people to opt-in. I needed to figure out how to get people to do this, so I spoke up and asked.
"Well, you can build a lead magnet, create a book for your lead magnet, create a video series, workshops... all kinds of things". He had all of these fantastic ideas that he shared with me - it was like a free strategy session!
That’s when the idea of building a brand or providing a service closely associated with the name Hawk Mikado started. I tried everything. I spent six months writing a book, which I didn't know how to market or sell. I just kept trying to figure things out little by little. And in that process, I discovered what would be a key and pivotal component of the Lead Flow Engine. And though I didn’t know it at the time, this was really powerful because while I did everything wrong, I learned what was right to do, and I've used it to fast-track a lot of success in my business since then.
As our agency grew, my wife and I started going on trips. One of the things that helped us be able to completely step out yet have the business running itself was being able to have it fully automated. We traveled around North America. We went from mastermind to mastermind, going from place to place, and we got to experience some of the most incredible relationship-building.
We had so much fun. We went paint-balling (I ended up coming home and buying my own paintball set!), I got to speak on stage, hang out with friends, work at the pool and see some of the most incredible places in Canada.
But the coolest part of this trip was meeting some of the most famous names in online marketing. I got to interview them along the way, and they shared some significant key insights that took what we ultimately knew and helped bring some light to things we saw them doing.
We did what I call Funnel Hacking; we spent tens of thousands of dollars buying their products, figuring out what they were doing, investing with them, and getting to know what they were thinking. I'd ask questions like "what is the thing that made you successful?" and there were a bunch of things each of them shared that helped us in our business and ultimately brought us to where we are now.
